Creative Watercolor Techniques for Card Making

This card has a little bit of stamping, die cutting, stenciling and water coloring. I don’t watercolor very often. It isn’t my normal medium for coloring but I have had a set of Zig watercolor pens for some time. My goal has been to use some of my older items this year so I brought them out for this card.

I first stamped my image on some watercolor paper and then began to watercolor the images. I added color with the Zig pens and then used a water brush to spread the color out. I added more color in some areas to create some shadows. I’m no expert in water coloring but was happy with my results. I cut some additional die cuts from white cardstock and added them to the back of the colored images.

For my background, I used a layering stencil to create a birthday background. This stencil creates a “wreath” with images around the outside and an open area in the middle. I moved the stencil around so that the “opening” was more towards one side since I had decided I would place my watercolor image off to the side.

When I was deciding where to place the watercolor piece I felt that it needed something to highlight the image better. It seemed to get lost when I just placed it on top of the background. I used two sequential dies to create a frame for my image.

I die cut the happy birthday from some blue mirror cardstock and the shadow for the “birthday” in some silver cardstock.

I adhered everything to my panel and then added a blue mat before adding it to my card base.

Here is one more look at my finished card.
