DIY Floating Vellum Card Technique for Special Occasions

I have a sister that has a birthday on Valentine’s Day. I wanted to make a card for her birthday that incorporates both her birthday and Valentine’s Day.

This card also has a technique that Jennifer McGuire recently showed on one of her YouTube videos. This uses vellum and gives the illusion of the vellum “floating” above your panel.

  • I first created my background panel using Simon Says Stamp’s Heart Blooms stencil.
  • I started in the middle of the stencil with Pink Diamond Fresh Dye ink from Altenew using a blending brush and a light hand.
  • I then added Water Hycanith and Mint Choc Fresh Dye inks making sure to overlap the colors which blended the colors nicely.

  • I had several die cuts left over from a previous card I recently made and decided to use them on my card.
  • I die cut a circle from vellum using Decorative Circles from Pink Fresh Studios.
  • The left-over die cuts had some dimension to them as I had added a couple of white card stock die cuts to the back of them.
  • I added those die cuts to the front of my vellum die cut and then glued them down.
  • I cut two more white die cuts for the same items I had adhered on the front of the circle.
  • I turned the vellum over and adhered the die cuts to the back directly above the front die cuts.
  • I then added glue to the die cuts on the back and added it to my panel.

I pulled a foiled sentiment out of my stash and cut some white strips to add behind the sentiment. I then adhered it to my card panel and then the panel to my card base.

  • For the inside of my card, I stamped my inside greeting in VersaMark ink.
  • I added some detail silver embossing powder from Gina K and heat set it.

To add some interest to the inside and to tie it to the front panel, I used the same stencil and inks to add the image around the outer edge of the card. I didn’t add any ink to the middle which left me plenty of room to add my personal message. After inking up the panel, I simply wiped my sentiment with a soft cloth to remove any residual ink and then adhered it to the inside of my card.

I really liked the look of the “floating” image on the front of my card. This is a technique that I will be using again.
